Frequently Asked Questions Can I keep my current phone number? Yes! We can move almost any phone number except cell phone numbers. In most cases, all you have to do is give us the exact billing address from your phone bill. If I move my number are you guys going to fold up shop and lose it? LOL - Not a chance. This is our third major upgrade of services, not something new. We've been in business since the 90's and working specifically with phone services since 2004. The big wire-line providers have a better chance of going out of business than we do, partially because of companies like us, but mostly because they forgot about their customers. Can I use this service for my business? For most non-PBX small business customers, we can do it for an extra $10. What's the "inexpensive converter box" you mentioned? Everyone has heard of phone jacks that plug into your computer's USB port. To avoid the complication of having your computer involved, you can use something called an "ATA" (analog telephone adapter) which is a tiny converter box about the size of two decks of cards to add a phone jack to your broadband modem. The broadband modem plugs into one side of the converter box, then whatever used to plug into the broadband modem plugs into the other side, almost like a splitter for the network cord. You can plug your cordless phone directly into the phone jack on the box or plug the box into a wall jack to "feed" all the wiring in your house. We can get these for you at the wholesale price of about $39. It's not a service-specific piece of hardware, so if you don't stick with us, you can use it with any digital phone service. This is not the only way to use our service, see the next question. What other options are there for connecting to your phone service? The converter box method is by far the most popular way to use our service because it just makes us a replacement for your current home phone, but you can also use our service with video phones (we can get these for you for about $200), computer programs that act as phones (some of these are free), and WiFi phones that are similar to cell phones (you can get these online for $50). I regularly make calls on my home phone sitting at Arby's - no kidding. What are all these features and options? You can find the complete list here. What kind of broadband connection do I need?
Our service works best with cable internet, FIOS, or DSL, but we also have customers using "fixed wireless"
services (antenna on your roof), "3G" cellular data connections, and
other types of high-speed broadband like T1. Most satellite
connections will not work, specifically the ones that require a phone
wire connection. There are a few expensive "full-duplex" satellite
connections that will work. |
